2010 Drive the Dream Gala A Major Success

The annual Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala celebrated the entertainers and extraordinary individuals that make a daily impact in our lives through their words, performances and actions this past Saturday with the theme of “Heroes, Stars and Idols.” Guests were treated to amazing performances from past American Idol contestants including; from season 8, Scott MacIntyre and Matt Giraud; and from season 7, Brooke White and Michael Johns.

The Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala, co-hosted by Barrett-Jackson and held in conjunction with the world-famous Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event, garners some of the Valley’s most-celebrated personalities and attendees enjoyed the entertainment of all four American Idols, plus Valley talent eight year old Athena Creese and rising star eleven year old Jalon Watts.  Emcees for the evening were Childhelp ambassadors, actor John O’Hurley, known for his role as J. Peterman in hit sitcom Seinfeld, and former Charlie’s Angels actress Cheryl Ladd.

FOX News Channel anchors Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly were on hand as well as Baier was recognized for his excellence in journalism with the Childhelp Positive Impact in the Media Award, presented to him by last year’s winner, Kelly.

Local philanthropists Lynn and Foster Friess received the Spirit of the Children Award, awarded annually to Childhelp supporters who have generously given their time and good fortune to children’s causes.  Chandler based Isagenix, who is a world leader in nutritional cleansing, received the Childhelp Founder’s 50th Anniversary Corporate Award for their continued support of Childhelp.

Event Gala Co-Chairs were Missy Anderson, Jinger Richardson and Susie Wesley, Honorary Chairs were Michelle and Ed Robson and the Event Chair Emeritus is Linda Pope.

The annual Childhelp Drive the Dream Gala is Childhelp’s largest fundraiser of the year. All proceeds from the gala benefit Childhelp’s programs and services in Arizona. For more information about Childhelp Drive the Dream, visit www.childhelpdrivethedream.org.






Childhelp’s Make A Difference Dinner to Honor Virginia Volunteers

(January 27, 2010) – On February 1st, Childhelp Children’s Center of Virginia Volunteer Program will be holding its 3rd annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner called the “Making a Difference” Dinner. The event will take place from 6:30-9:30 at the Waterford at Fair Oaks, located at 12025 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Fairfax, VA 22030.

U.S. Congressman Gerry Connolly, VA-11, will be attending the event and giving a speech on the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community. He will be presented with the Hero of the Children Award for his help in securing a FY 2010 Funding Request of $200,000 for CCCV and its mental health program. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova will be attending the event and giving a speech on the importance of working with at-risk and abused children and will assist in the presentation of awards to volunteers.

The Childhelp Children’s Center of Virginia Volunteer Program operates a mentor and tutor program which consists of 60 at-risk youth identified by Fairfax County Child Protective Services, Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax County Public Libraries, Hispanics Against Child Abuse and Neglect, and Victim’s Services. These youth, ranging in age from 6 to 18 years old, were matched with trained adults who help navigate them through the dangers of life, steering them in the right direction and reinforcing our motto “Determination + Hard Work + Discipline = The Way to Success”. Childhelp will graduate its first senior class this year, with all seniors attending some form of higher education.

In April of 2009, the Childhelp Children’s Center of Virginia Volunteer Programs received the 2009 Volunteer Program of the Year Award from Volunteer Fairfax and Fairfax County. The Childhelp Washington Area Chapter received the 2009 Adult Volunteer Group of the Year Award from Volunteer Fairfax and Fairfax County. In June of 2009, Volunteer Programs received the 2009 Blue Diamond Award for civic engagement awarded by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. In 2009, 204 volunteers donated 11,517 volunteer hours to the center. Over 60 chapter members donated over 5,500 volunteer hours to Childhelp.

Childhelp will be honoring its volunteers which include: mentors, tutors, center volunteers, playroom volunteers, K-3 Reading Partners, chapter members, and board members. Six volunteers were selected to receive the “You Make a Difference” Award, recipients include: Megan Martin, Most Mentor Hours 2009- from Prince William County, VA; Emily Wilson, Most Tutor Hours 2009- from Arlington County, VA; Dave Rubando, Most Driven Award 2009- from Fairfax County, VA; Natalie Lambert, Public Awareness Award- from Fairfax County, VA; Christine Rales, Capitol Careoake 2009- from Washington, D.C.; Heather Corsini, Capitol Careoake 2009- from Montgomery County, MD.
